An 8×8 based on an episode of Llama Llama’s animated Netflix series all about one of the most fun activities for little llamas (and kids): camping!
Look out, world–Llama Llama is a TV star! The beloved character, made famous by Anna Dewdney’s best-selling picture books, is the star of his own original series, now airing on Netflix. In this episode-based 8×8, Llama Llama goes camping for the very first time and learns a valuable lesson: what seems scary can actually be super-duper FUN! Your little llamas will love relating to their favorite picture book character as he faces new and challenging situations.
Anna Dewdney was a teacher, mother, and enthusiastic proponent of reading aloud to children. She continually honed her skills as an artist and writer and published her first Llama Llama book in 2005. Her passion for creating extended to home and garden and she lovingly restored an eighteenth-century farmhouse in southern Vermont. She wrote, painted, gardened, and lived there with her partner, Reed, her two daughters, two wirehaired pointing griffons, and one bulldog. Anna passed away in 2016, but her spirit will live on in her books.
I suppose anything like a book series is hard to relay from one author to another. There will never be another Dr Seuss and there will never be another Anna Dewdney. I’ve been reading Llama Llama to my granddaughter forever and so when this came out I thought “terrific” as she loves to camp. The book, however, is not worthy of its title. Way too above level and just too wordy or something. The whole story seems to revolve around the one character who likes gadgets. The artwork has been modernized, and well, between that and the writing, I won’t be purchasing any further non Anna books unfortunately.
This is not in the same style of Anna Dewdney’s original books, the only thing similar is the characters. It isn’t lyrical and the tone is completely different, its a summary of a netflix episode. The theme of the book is breaking away from your gadgets, rather then the magic and wonder of the woods and camping.
Our 3yo loves the Llama series. It’s nice to have a broad enough selection to cover things like swimming and camping in a positive light. The other reviewer mentioned the cheap quality and they are right, but the price is cheap and the time of introducing something like camping is short. We appreciate how these “skill” books introduce a new concept and foster a love of reading. Llama books are also available in heirloom quality hardcovers for the books that will be read over and over. I see short term value instead of cheap. We are pretty deep in the Llama ecosystem, so grain/salt as needed. I liken this series to a modern Bernstein Bears.
I bought this book to prepare my 4 and 3 year olds for camping and did not realize this book is based on the Llama Llama show. I was anticipating it to be an original Llama Llama book that rhymes but this is not it. My kids still enjoyed the story, however, so we’ll be keeping it.
My kids and I love Llama Llama books! The stories are interesting and the books are colorful. We have several Llama Llama books because they are so wonderful for children.
Bought this, based on the description, for my three year old granddaughter who loves Lama Lama and who was going camping with us. Unfortunately, the lesson learned was that camping is more fun with devices turned off, not that camping isn’t scary. So its a toddler book teaching a lesson too old for the intended audience and just confusing. I was very disappointed.
